Gingham and small prints were a utilitarian fabric popular with American agricultural families in the early 1900s. The intimate scale of the print meant that rips and tears could be easily repaired with small patches, making it economical as well as pretty. The tiny checks of gingham are ideal for smaller soft furnishings, while leftover fragments can be used to make lavender bags, cushions and patchwork pieces.
