Vintage Japanese & Homespun Textiles
Barbara loves the beautiful texture and colours in antique and vintage Japanese textiles, particularly the 'Boro' fabrics and has made stunningly beautiful cushions from these wonderful vintage finds.
Boro textiles were made in the late 19th and early 20th century by impoverished Japanese people from re-used and recycled indigo dyed homespun hemp and cotton rags. These were patched and sewn, piece by piece, patched with whatever fabric was available. These textiles were never intended to viewed, today they are often seen as unintended art, with the qualities of collage, some pieces are just stunning hanging on a wall, the sheer variety of blues and patchwork have a soul of their own.

Notes: 'Boro' a term used and widely recognized to describe the patched and mended textiles from Japan, usually from the Meiji era (1868 to 1912).
